Still nowhere near as bad as Weir and Lesh chatting it up on "The View" Or Hart on "Regis and Kelly Lee"--Pathetic.

No comparison. Weir and Lesh were pitching their own product ("go see us"), as Jerry and Bob used to do on Letterman, etc etc. And they certainly came up with their own words and chat.

Not only did Dylan mouth some truly cloying, smarmy words wrapped in the flag; it's manipulative to the million-dollar max and dishonest to boot. The product is made in America, yeah, but it's not American-owned. Which doesn't matter in one sense; the jobs are here, just as Nissan, I think, and other companies, employ workers here. I'm not a fan of mega-corporations but don't much care which country owns them. However, the ad puts all its manipulative weight, to which Dylan's presence is integral, on it being un-fake American, and then overplays some kind of emotional bond between America's True Essence and cars, linking it with heavy doses of implied integrity, all in order to sell a brand ... bleeeech.

I don't hate all advertising; I can appreciate a clever commercial. People work hard to make those things and sometimes they do a really good job. But that one is so icky on so many levels. So dishonest on so many levels. And Dylan's presence is a key part of its "tone," making it double triple mega icky.

If I ever catch Bob and Phil doing something comparable I will rag on them just as much. But for now it's apples to road apples.

The It's Alright Mama Mia lyrics are gold kiddo.

“So let Germany brew your beer. Let Switzerland make your watch. Let Asia assemble your phone. We will build your car.”

Asia? Is that a country?

And evidently Chevrolet uses cancer as part of their marketing. Other small horrors > http://www.avclub.com/article/the-politics-puppies-and-penises-of-this-years-sup-201008

I'll stop before I turn (into) the crank.

Notice it's all stereotypes, too. And two are traditional associations that are probably mostly untrue today, but people can be comfortable with them through long familiarity, which I bet came up in the marketing meetings: "German beer and Swiss watches feel like tradition and heritage, so that's the association we want to make," someone probably said.

They didn't want to say "China" because, uh, oops, maybe not so OK given the issues around Apple in China, and "Made in China" would most definitely have the wrong feel, but "Asia" sounds all technie and so maybe it's Japanese and those Asian people who are all engineers, right?

Yeah, I can crank out the crankiness when I get on a roll.

I remember the Jerry Levi's commercial ... same slippery slope into that Star Wars trash compacter, but at least it wasn't full immersion (my youtube isn't buffering so I'll watch when it does and see if that's true) and he had the grace to give an apologetic excuse. Also he'd just come out of a coma, so the brain cells maybe weren't working quite right :-)

Perspective at the time:

Interesting interview here that touches on a lot of things, including a few words on that commercial at the end:

Decent writeup until he tried to claim the ad was somehow different than others and Dylan was kind of not really shilling for Chrysler per se because it didn't specifically talk about Chrysler's specific merits. I guess he hasn't seen a lot of ads ...

The ad doesn't bother me in the least.
